NOMAD London By Henning Stummel Architects

story

“’I think we need a new leather sofa darling’, Alice said. Of course, she was right!

“At that moment she inadvertently triggered a journey. For a while we tried to behave like normal people and went to shops to see what’s out there.

“Two years and six permutations later – the Nomad Sofa is ready!

“Much love, attention, fiddling about, learning and optimisation has gone into developing this furniture, so we now want to make this refined design available to a wider group of people.

“I set about working out how to make a simple, strong and durable sofa frame that could be slotted and assembled together – no screws, no glue, no tools – using one regular sheet of birch ply, absolutely minimising waste.

Award winning London architect, Henning Stummel, studied architecture and urbanism at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt and the ETH Zurich. Both schools are still heavily influenced by the Bauhaus ideology, where form follows function and modern manufacturing methods are adapted to allow better quality, lower price products for a wider circle of consumers.

Henning worked with Norman Foster and David Chipperfield Architects in London, before setting up his practice in 2000. Henning has been a visiting teacher at the University of Cambridge, the Chinese University Hong Kong and more recently visiting professor at the Muenster School of Architecture.

Henning’s practice has won numerous awards and has twice been shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA Stephen Lawrence. The work has been published internationally. The most noteworthy building to date is the Tin House in London. The architect’s practice – and home - is located here and the Nomad Sofa range is on display.
